I'm not always a fan of filming a stage show, simply because theatre is such a quintessentially live experience, but in some cases it works quite well, and Passion is one of these.

In some ways, I think this show may work even better on video than it did in the theatre. This is a show about emotion, and therefore you want to feel connected to the actors. The intimate closeness of the camera allows this in a way that sitting in the balcony of a theatre never can. I do wish they'd included a few more wide-angle shots, but overall, it creates a wonderful atmosphere.

The cast - which is the same as the Broadway cast recording - are wonderful. Donna Murphy is stunning, with a brilliant, nuanced performance. Marin Mazzie is fantastic, with her beautiful singing voice, and Jere Shea, while not quite living up to his female co-stars, still manages to hold his own.

The recording is also available now on DVD, which includes commentary by Stephen Sondheim, James Lapine, Ira Weitzman, and actors Donna Murphy, Marin Mazzie, and Jere Shea. This is some of the best commentary I've heard on any DVD, period, and is absolutely fascinating for a fan of the show.
