This film was my first real introduction to the show, and although it is dated now - with a release date of 1955 - it's a good interpretation of the show, that sticks close to the source, and works pretty well overall.
There are two major songs missing here from the stage version ("It's a Scandal! It's a Outrage!" and "Lonely Room,"), and "Out of My Dreams" is now a solo. A lot of the choreography is taken from the original production, which is interesting to see. I actually rather enjoy the dream ballet sequence, which has seemed pretty boring to me when seen on stage in amateur productions. The cast is fine, and they all do their own singing, which is nice! Charlotte Greenwood is a wonderful Aunt Eller, and I've got no complaints with the rest of the cast. Although I would probably choose the DVD of the London production now to introduce someone to the show, I still think the movie is one of the more successful movie musicals, and will always have a place in any fan's video library. |
